Hanauma Bay - Hawaii

Aug 26, 2009 Hanauma Bay – Hawaii

If you love snorkeling and underwater marine life, there is perhaps no better place to snorkel than Hanauma Bay in Hawaii. This secluded bay is a national park located south of Diamond Head. What is unique about this bay is that the water is only waist deep for several hundred meters from the shoreline and the reef fish are abundant. We decided to take the bus there. It was the kids first experience on the “shaker”. They were fully loaded down with everything from snorkel gear to lawn chairs. The bus was standing room only and they were getting jostled around. Good for them to begin to see how the rest of the world gets around. The bus arrived at the bay and we went for the orientation at the center which explained the do’s and don’ts of swimming in the bay. Nicholas was keen on taking his underwater Camera and actually got a couple pretty good shots.
Emily, Elizabeth and Emily’s friend Mecca spent the day sunning and swimming. Such a hard life!
When we got back from Hanauma Bay, Nick and Chris went for a walk along the beach and discovered a pier were all the crazy locals were jumping off the concrete pier which was about 18 feet above the water with clearly marked signs that swimming and jumping were prohibited. The rules were enforced by foot patrol policemen issuing warnings and tickets to whoever broke the law. The minute the police officers went to the next pier to issue tickets, the locals and MY BOYS returned to their fun of jumping off the pier into the rising surf and then hiding from the authorities. Nicholas describes it as “some of the most fun he has ever had”
