Trekking to the Whitsunday Islands

September 24, 2009 Hiking Again then off to the Whitsunday Islands.
The kids and Tracie are hooked on hiking. Before we were allowed to leave Townsville they voted to do another hike before being confined to the car for another 7 hours. Can’t really blame them and I was easily convinced to give in to their request.( If I didn’t it would be likely that they would go anyway and strap me to the roof for the duration of the day). They chose Castle Mountain in the heart of Townsville to climb..Even Stan decided to come as van guarding was a whole bunch more boring and painful than getting his heart rate up and sore muscles.
After the hike we made our way to the Whitsunday Islands. We booked a place for three days called the Laguna Quays Resort which had a family special rate for these magnificent condo’s which backed onto Turtle Pines Championship Golf course. The resort had its own private marina for the condo owners to pull into for a few days of golf. This place however has been hit by some tough economic times and is a little tired but nice all the same. It should be good to get the kids caught back up with school and see if I can get my back into order. Being cramped in a car is doing nothing for my spine and my aches. Thank god for Advil.
There is no twilight here and at 6:00 it is like someone turned out all the lights and it is pitch-black. The birds that are nocturnal make the sounds that are used in most horror flicks and the Flying Foxes (massive bats) are buzzing around the treetops then swoop down towards you feasting on the insects that are trying to bite you. I have to say it is neat but a little unnerving.
